Wizard of the Blizzard

Out of our memory palace there comes a winter of snowballs,

which is simply a packing problem leading to the emergence

of a giant snowman. Many mittens patting, the neighborhood

children all accounted for. Soon, there are three mounds

so big they dwarf life lived around family fire. Take care of

my hat, says one father, surrendering it. Would the children

recall watching an owl dig plunge-holes inside each snowball?

The future lived in every swivel of the owl’s head; bobbing,

swaying, clapping wings, it zigzagged up through the snowman,

filling the father’s hat with its own head, crowning itself.
