The amazing Amber Sparks joins the illustrious group of Special Guest Stars here at Pokrass Prompts! I’m blown away by Amber’s tiny 200 word story, “Scabs” (below). Enjoy!
Scabs
by Amber Sparks
The twins, those pretty problems, would skate up and down the picket line at the Amalgamated Sugar plant, screaming “scab” at the people lined up at the door to take the place of the striking workers. Everybody smiled, even the scabs. Their dad’s favorites, the twins would later take their own place on the line years later. They would never leave Baltimore, living alone together in a small apartment over an antique store, drinking tea from chipped cups they got on deep discount from the store. They would break hundreds of hearts that healed, but their own would stay open, red wounds that never scabbed over. They would lose the roller skates, but never that strange sensation of falling on your ass at the moment you were most alive.
